Translating the complex rules, techniques, and dynamics of Mixed Martial Arts into a physical Leporello and an interactive tablet training companion.
This project systematically analyzes and deconstructs the sport of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA). By combining a physical 8-page folded Leporello brochure with a responsive, interactive tablet application, the system presents complex fighting techniques, historical timelines, and statistical demographics in a highly structured visual language. Bold, high-contrast typography and custom three-dimensional illustrations bridge the gap between technical clarity and the intense, raw energy of the sport.
The Challenge
MMA is a highly dynamic sport, combining diverse disciplines like Jiu-Jitsu, Muay Thai, Boxing, and more. The primary design challenge lay in translating this variety of rules, fighting techniques, and spatial layouts into a visual idea that was easily understood. It was crucial to establish a balance between rigorous, educational information design and the raw, aggressive character of the sport. The physical medium required a layout that felt unified across folding seams, while the digital companion needed to remain highly functional and readable in an active training environment.
The Process
Spatial Layout & Typography
The Layout is built upon a strict three-column grid. Large margins at the bottom and inside fold lines prevent content from disappearing into the creases, while providing substantial whitespace for visual breathing room. The typography relies on two sans-serif typefaces to establish a clear hierarchy.
The color palette is restricted to a high-contrast triad of black, white, and a vibrant primary red to reflect the intensity of the sport. Graduated red tints are introduced selectively in data graphics to ensure legibility and visual separation.
Illustration & Pictograms
A 3D illustration style explains complex techniques, such as throws and holds. These illustrations allow the viewer to understand the difficulties behind these highly technical maneuvers. Pictograms, by contrast, are rendered as minimal 2D outlines, ensuring they act as quick visual aids without competing with the primary 3D illustrations.
Leporello
The print solution consists of a double-sided Leporello brochure. It guides the reader through a logical timeline - commencing with the ancient origins, establishing the modern rules, and diving into illustrated combat techniques and demographics. The reverse side of the cover acts as a visual representation of the sport's risks.
Tablet Application
The digital App extends the print publication into an interactive tablet training companion. Designed to be used directly while exercising, the application groups techniques into four categories: strikes, kicks, clinches, and ground combat. Each technique features a looping animation demonstrating execution. A secondary information layer displays glowing hotspot indicators on a fighter's body; tapping these reveals target zones and injury probabilities, transforming dry statistics into a playful learning experience.
